The Key to Happiness?

In the rom-com How Do You Know, Reese Witherspoon's character Lisa briefly meets with a therapist (played by Tony Shalhoub) after seeing her passion and identity crushed when she gets cut from her Olympic softball team.  She asks him: "I was just wondering if there was one general thing  that you've found over the years to be generally true in a general way that would help anyone in any situation."

His reply: "That's a great question.  Yes. I would say, figure out what you want and learn how to ask for it."

Her response: "Those are both really hard."

When you think about it, the heart of any New Year's resolution is the desire to make ourselves happier in some way.  But what makes us truly happy?  What is it you really want? Not what others tell you to want, or what you think you should want or feel you should want.  Reese (or more accurately, director and screenwriter James L. Brooks) is right: that is a surprisingly hard question to answer honestly.  Even harder perhaps is to actually go ahead and ask for it.  To say the words out loud, to put your desire out into the universe, laid bare for all to see.

On the other hand ... what's the worst that can happen?

Let's see, shall we?

  1. I guess for me if what I want or expect is too dependent, upon another individual...that's where things get complicated for me.
